MySteps™ for Overweight Teens
The PACE MySteps program was originally developed and shown to be effective with funding from the National Cancer Institute, and is designed for adolescents ages 12-16 who are overweight or at risk for becoming overweight. In clinical trials testing, twice as many of the MySteps; teens reduced their BMI scores at the 1 year follow-up point compared to control group teens (approximately 60% versus 30%). The more that teens logged in to use the program, the better the results: 94% of the top 25% of teen users reduced their BMI scores at 1 year. The current MySteps program is 4 months long, with weekly content on key nutrition and physical activity behaviors, as well as goal-setting and tracking functions. The program’s focus is to promote gradual weight loss and long-term health benefits by guiding teens to make sustainable improvements in increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber, decreasing dietary fat consumption, increasing total activity (moderate, vigorous or lifestyle), and decreasing sedentary time. The program strongly encourages pedometer use and provides tools for tracking accumulated steps, in addition to other forms of physical activity. MySteps includes a program designed specifically for the teen’s parent or guardian, to help them effectively support their child in making healthful changes. After the initial 4-month program use, optional access to ongoing weight loss support and tools may also be offered. Text messaging support and tracking capabilities are also available for teens and parents.
