Jennifer Shapiro, Ph.D. - Scientific Director
Jennifer Shapiro, Ph.D. Scientific Director, is a licensed clinical psychologist. She completed her Ph.D. in 2004 in clinical psychology from the University at Albany, State University of New York and began to specialize in Eating Disorders and Obesity since the start of her doctoral program in 1999. Dr. Shapiro completed her clinical internship at Duke University Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in Durham, NC in 2004, a two year post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC), Department of Psychiatry, and then became Assistant Professor at UNC.
At UNC, Dr. Shapiro developed and facilitated the UNC Behavioral Weight Control Program and also treated clients in individual and group therapy. Her research at UNC focused on the use of various modes of Information Technology (CD-ROM, text-messaging, web based treatment) for children and adults with disordered eating as she was one of the first few researchers to use such novel approaches for the treatment of disordered eating. Thus, she is founder and chair of the Information Technology for the Treatment of Eating Disorders Special Interest Group of AED. Dr. Shapiro joined Santech, Inc. in 2009 as Scientific Director in which she prepares grant applications and oversees the development and implementation of funded projects.
Dr. Shapiro has received several grants for her research, has published numerous scientific papers on disordered eating, and annually presents at international conferences including the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), Eating Disorders Research Society (EDRS), Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM), and The Obesity Society. She is also an ad hoc reviewer for several scientific journals.
