Founders

  • Kevin Patrick, MD, MS

    Kevin PatrickKevin Patrick, MD, MS, is a professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego and has served as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine since 1996. He received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of Utah. He is a past president of the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research and has served on the Secretary's Council for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and on the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board. His research focuses on the development of integrated clinical, home, and wireless technologies to measure and improve health behaviors, and he has served as a consultant to a variety of public and private organizations.

  • James F. Sallis, PhD

    James SallisJames F. Sallis, PhD, received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Memphis State University and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Sallis is currently a professor of psychology at San Diego State University. He is especially known for his contributions in the measurement, influences, interventions, and advocacy of physical activity, but he also studies nutrition and obesity. He serves as the program director of Active Living Research, which supports research on environmental and policy solutions to increase physical activity. Dr. Sallis has co-authored over 400 scientific publications, is on several journals’ editorial boards, and is one of the world’s most cited scientists. He is a frequent consultant to government, research, and corporate organizations worldwide. Time magazine named him an “obesity warrior.”

  • Karen Calfas, PhD

    Karen CalfasKaren Calfas, PhD, is an assistant clinical professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology with an emphasis in behavioral medicine in 1990 from the joint doctoral program at UCSD and SDSU. Her pre-doctoral internship in behavioral medicine was completed at Brown University School of Medicine. Dr. Calfas is an original member of the PACE team and is the co-principal investigator on four currently funded PACE intervention clinical trials. She has authored over 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and has lectured nationally and internationally on exercise adherence and related topics.

The three founders remain actively involved in overseeing Santech’s multidisciplinary team, as well as in ongoing research and development, and commercialization activities.
